A Spectral Mist Rises

A spectral mist rises
conspiring quietly
against the current

Silent plea with morning’s air,
a hushed bid for escape
Slowly a vapor ascends, smiling
upon a sun-bound sky

Below, soft ripples massage water’s edge,
teasing smoothed stones
fading, flowing,
flirting with soft retreat

Hails of sprinkled droplets arch upward,
wed to a moment’s moisture
and descend, dancing
pitter-patter
into the
pond

Near-soundless, this scheme;
water betrayed by light,
light unveiled by water –
scattered naked, sparkling
on open blue
canvas

Between these two witnesses,
what words are whispered
when no one is
watching?
